The Digital Divide

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005 at 12:15 PM  |  View Timeline

Good piece by Scott McNealy entitled "A Community Effort Is Needed to Eliminate the Digital Divide"  where he highlights education as the critical piece in resolving this gap.

He goes on to formulate a plan around access, technology and tools and highlights the difficulties to date.

Will the next decade deliver on the potential for distance learning? And in doing so have immense social consequences?

Jim Rome on Jason Giambi

For all those myopic, contrarian, or otherwise ignorant people out there who make light of the problem of steroids and other drugs in sports, have a look at Jason Giambi’s season this year. Jim Rome offers a nice summary:

Yankee DH Jason Gambi continues to struggle and now he’s turned to Don Mattingly to help him out of his slump.  Look, Donnie Ballgame’s the man, but the Yankees couldn’t dig up Ruth, Mantle and Gehrig to give him batting lessons and it wouldn’t make a difference. Fact is, Giambi is the biggest bust in the history of free agency and nothing is going to change that. It appears that Jason was the ultimate steroid phenomenon, who was an MVP with roids and a fringe big leaguer without them. Or worse yet, Jason plays like Jeremy Giambi without roids. And unless Mattingly is going to starting feeding him some more of those horse hormones or whatever he was shooting up, it’s not going to make a difference.

I (heart) Technology Part II

My phone continued to blink for about an hour after I was able to retrieve my messages (see previous post).

More astonishing was my glee at receiving a message via the Citibank website (my credit card honchos)!  I had filled out a contact form groveling that they not assess a finance charge for a late payment I was making at the time (the bill was trapped in my email inbox for too long!)

I figured there was slim to no chance of getting a reply. To my delight, I actually got a response (albeit circuitous, they send you email to let you know you have a message waiting) and they told me not to worry that they wouldn’t charge me for my tardiness.

I came to work today and found my telephone blinking with a voicemail notification. When I tried to retrieve messages the system told me that voicemail was unavailable.

So I am wondering how the phone knows to blink?
